A ninety+ year previous dwelling house does unlikely have a circuit breaker yet fuses except the wiring substitute into upgraded. optimistically in addition they upgraded the cord using fact the cord then had a textile insulation no longer rubber or plastic. interior the order of the main probable failure it particularly is: A fuse or if there substitute into an improve the breaker tripped. An open cord a cord that broke or broke aside via melting ( very frightening) I even have seen the place a cord went first to one outlet and then yet another and then there substitute right into a short pigtail piece of cord connecting to each and each outlet. it continues to be in parallel yet some actual cord destroy broke the connections. In some there may well be one vast cord going to a junction container and the others peel off. That junction container is interior the attic someplace and is provided via a heavier cord. probable no longer as much as code. there will be a junction container frequently interior the attic that had a destroy or different failure and despite in the event that they have been in a real parallel connection you've killed all of them. series connections in my journey are no longer all that uncommon. It expenses lots to run guy or woman copper cord each and each of ways from each and each outlet all a thank you to the breaker container so it is going to the two be a sort of series with 3 black and 3 white and a eco-friendly while you're fortunate adequate to have a grounded plug. any incorrect way is to apply the junction container i discussed. it particularly is a compromise I even have seen yet i do no longer comprehend it it particularly is as much as code.

One question.

In the outlet that tested 118 VAC did you test across the hot & neutral side of the out let or did you test from the hot side to the ground or the box.

What it sounds like is that the neutral wire is open in the first outlet.

The other outlet seems to be wired after the first one.

It could be that neutral side of the outlet or the neutral wiring is bad. When you take out the outlet test across the wires.
If you have juice then the outlet is bad,

check for a wall switch that turns them on. It sounds like the tabs on plug may have been broken off. This is common when a room does not have a cieling fixture in it. The plugs are set up to control lamps!

I tend to agree with Floyd. If you didn't stick the leads into the two thin slots and used the ground hole, you would have an open neutral circuit. Be careful with this, it is easy to think that the receptacle is dead because it doesn't have voltage, but when you grab it with your hands you become the ground and get shocked. good luck.

sounds like a wiring malfunction on the second outlet. check your wiring carefully and be safe.
