I have a betta fish, and for the time being, I am keeping his tank under a lamp to keep the water warm until I am able to get a bigger tank for him with a heater. When I have the lamp on, the fins look great, but when I turned off the lamp the other day to move it, when he spread his fins out, they looked thinner and like they're losing their color.
Any suggestions/ guidance?
Is this normal?

That's a fairly common response to a betta being in a bowl. There are two causes that can happen separately or together. One, a lack of swimming space will cause the tail to thin from no use and two. ammonia in the water can cause thinning and even holes in the fin.

Once you get him in a tank you should see that problem reverse it's self.

Betta needs a heater in the tank to ensure the temperature is 26~28. They are healthier in warm water.

Betta is very easy to keep. Some simple rules to follow:

1) Small fish bowl without filter: change 100% water every 3 days. (Use water conditioner, of course)

2) Filtered tank: Do 20% water change every week.

3) Ideal water temperature: 26~28 degree

4) Feed once every day or every two days. Never overfeed betta.

5) Remove uneaten food right away to keep water clean.

6) Give betta a plant to rest on. They like it very much. Silk or real one. Soft leaves plants are better choices.

If you do not like to use water conditioner, you can boil the tap water and use it when it cools down to the right temperature.

It's not easy to treat Betta's fin rot, so it's very important to ensure water quality is good and clean. If Betta's fin just starts to show some signs, do not use medicine yet. Change water and follow the rules. They usually will recover themselves as long as the conditions are corrected quickly.

Betta feels very stressed if being caught by a net. Try to avoid that too. Hope the above information is helpful.

You betta has fin rot. The best treatment id Jungle fungus clear. Thea's tablets treat 10 gallons but can be broken into smaller proportions. You should only feed you betta once a day inVeryy small proportions (their stomach is only the size of their eye balls) because from over feeding they can getswim bladderrdiseasee. Good job keeping your betta in a proper tank (lots of people keep them in small bowls) and good luck healing him!

I agree; lighting makes everything look better than it actually is. Instead of putting the tank under a lamp, how about getting a heating pad and putting the tank under it. It will warm the tank up a little bit and you wont have to put the fish under a harsh light.

I would watch him to make sure he isn't getting sick. It's summer. Do you need a heater? His tank should be at like 82 degrees. Well, I don't know where you live. So, read the other betta questions on this site and also look up pictures online to see if any match your betta's condition.

Actually I think it's normal for betta fins to look more vibrant under fluorescent lighting. It's the reason most pet stores display them in tanks backed by fluorescent light. It's normal.

Unless your betta is displaying other signs of illness, such as clamped fins, refusal to eat, lethargy or any signs of physical growths or wounds, I wouldn't worry about it.

Its not a good idea to have them under a lamp. It could make them sick. My two bettas are in different spots. One with little light and one close to a lamp and their water are both the same temperature.

The spectrum of the bulb enhances the colors on the fish depending on the type of bulb. Bettas usually do fine w/o a heater, unless it gets below 74 degrees.

Bettas' fins just look different under different lighting, his fins don't change, your eyes just see them differently...
