I don't think that is normal. I have some in my home that are 4 years old and still going. I have never had one burn out though, I hope they don't smell like that when they do!

If you still have the receipt for the bulb you could try to return it, or if you know the name of the company contact them and give your explanation and they may give you a free replacement.

My experience with them is that they last about 2 weeks, then won't work any more.
