Remember all the times your parents, or teachers, or coaches, would tell you that losing builds character? It really does, by helping people learn how to deal with, maturely and responsibly (one hopes), with adversity, with setbacks.
There's an entire generation of Yankee fandom that has a gaping crevice in their character -- since 1995, their team hasn't missed the postseason. They DO NOT KNOW how to deal with it. They've never had to. So the stress builds up and leaks (or explodes) out in tantrums or shoutfests or whatever.
And they're getting no fellow-fan goodwill because of the sheer, overwhelming ungraciousness they, as a population, have demonstrated during these past 12 seasons. The unending arrogance and conceit, the disdain they've dished out onto fans of other teams -- just for BEING fans of other teams, like they were following a false prophet -- is what has bought them this total lack of empathy and granted grace.
(Along the way, they've been deprived of one of their favorite taunts, "1918". Ever notice, though, how many of them have mentally edited out the 2004 season? Like it never happened.)
In 2007, the swagger is gone, and the rest of baseball fandom seems to be enjoying, not just the Yankees having fallen, but the crashing of the Yankee fans' imperiousness.
They've earned it.

Hmmmm. I know you're not talking bout me.
Success breeds just what you're talking about. We've been spoiled as Yankees fans winning 26 World Championships and having a successful franchise. We expect to win everything every year. Theres nothing wrong about that. I know as an avid Yankee fan I am extremely disappointed with the recent play of my team. They are lackluster and are getting used to losing. The team needs a shakeup and I feel that it starts with Joe Torre and Brian Cashman. If at the very least get rid of Torre and bring in Joe Girardi. Girardi will shake the team up and turn it around. Maybe not this year but maybe this year. Don't forget the Yankees are traditionally a second half team. If they make the Right move before the trading deadline ya never know.....

I know that this question is not directed at me, but I wanted to answer it anyway because you are my best Tigerific fan and friend ever.
The Yankees need to make some changes, changes in personnel as well as attitude. It becomes easy to rest on the laurel os former times then to make the changes for future times. Torre must go, Cashman must go. And the attitude that many fans have adopted through the rich years has to go as well. No longer does the Yankee mystique work. A champion is built through team work, dedication, and direction, something that my beloved team is missing at this time. So rub it in if you must, for I don't take offense. This Yankee fan promises you that

I for one feel great.Boston did not play the best baseball in June, we had a losing record even. Were not hitting at all, can't even get guys on base.BUT we still have 11.0 games on the Yankees. So it's a new month, and time for Boston to pull ahead even further.Sorry Yankee Fans, it's not going to be 27 in '07.And all your talk of 1978 is funny, because THOSE guys could play some baseball. All the Yankees have now is a bunch of pretty boys that can't and won't get dirty.

Ive been a Yankee fan my whole life......they aren't playing good baseball they don't deserve to win. However, I disagree---I LOVE IT when people hate on the Yankees because they are THE MOST SUCCESSFUL FRANCHISE IN SPORTS HISTORY.....noone hates losers....just look at all you pathetic "fans" who worry more about my Yankees than YOUR OWN TEAMS

I don't necessarily think that it Yankees fans cant take it, I dont see a ton of them on websites talking **** I see it as there are a ton of people out there like you who like to antagonize them and when they try to defend themselves everyone is like look at em they cant take it, if so many idiots like you wouldnt post the same question every other day, Yankees fans wouldnt be talking ****, or defending themselves or their team. Then no one would have to ask why is they can dish it out and not take it.

i think the greatest thing about yankee fans is that they're not losing faith.
so what if we believe in our team? what's wrong with loving your team no matter what? i think that's what should be expected out of the fans of any team.
and why wouldnt we be proud of our 26 rings? you can't forget what this team has accomplished in the past. dimaggio, gehrig, ruth, mantle, berra, etc. a team doesn't revolve around one season.
YOU CAN'T MAKE THE PLAYOFFS EVERY SEASON. yankee fans KNOW that they have a good team, which is why they're not losing faith.
i love watching yankee games, and sure, it's hard not having the record you're used to having, but you stick by your team no matter what.

To yanksfan223:
If only all Yankee fans were like you, but i've seen far too many games where they turn on their own team.

WILL YOU SHUT UP... they are going through one bad year. And the Tigers went through about 15 bad years.
Note: I'm not a Yankees fan I'm just sick of the never ending bashing of New York
