fine, brought it home, hooked everything up again and when they turned it on it would not boot up. A message said "please insert operating disk and press enter."
That's all it will ever do. I thought I would reformat but looked for that particular disk and could not find it. The manual said a copy should be made of the system when the computer is first started. This could then be used to get it going when and if something like this comes up.
I suppose the manufacturer should have a disk like this?? Is there any other way to get it going?
All the computers I've purchased had reformatting disks with them.

With the original packing should have come an operating disk in case the system has to be reinstalled.

What the system is doing is asking for this disk because it sees and error in the operating system. It is stuck on that error so you get the same message. It doesn't have to reformat and reinstall the OS (Operating System) unless the problem is a major one. However, unless you have that disk you are going to end up having to do it just to get it working again.

Get Linux. If you have another computer, you can go to http://www.mepis.org/mirrors or http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download, download an ISO image, burn it onto a blank cd, and boot from the live cd on your sons computer.

I know rumors say that linux is insufficient for everyday use or not very easy to use, but that is untrue. The only problem you'll run into is if you need to use a windows program. Most programs are emulated on linux or have a just as good, if not superior, alternative for linux.

Or, you could always buy another copy of Windows for a bundle of money. :D

Hope this helped.

I don't know if they will work, as the asker found his computer suddenly started working. :) Maybe you'll get lucky and the same will happen to you... Good luck.
