why do people feel the need to say betta fish? is there another betta? like betta cats? I just don't understand it, people don't say zebra danio fish... so why the need to add fish on the end of betta? if they feel the need to specify why not betta splenden?

yeah, I'm bored and sick, and this question has been bugging me for a while. shed some light on the issue at hand for me?

alright, so I can understand if you're asking in a store or talking aobut it to people, but in the FISH section, why would you need to say it? and this is a LOGICAL question, we're in the fish section, what else would you be talking about?!

also, to the person who said about the greek letter, that beta, this is betta and they aren't pronounced the same.

To Mia, no they do not sound the same. Two t's make a short e.... as in better, setter, wetter, letter, etc.

The proper pronunciation is bet-tay, not bay-tah.

BTW, beta is not the second word in the Greek alphabet, it is the second letter...

I guess the reason for people saying "betta fish" is that they are in the vast group of people who don't really pay attention to what is told to them and don't really read what is put in front of them to read. I GIVE YOU................ the spoiled people of the United States, the privileged, the always right, the egotistical self centered masses, those who can do no wrong and can do whatever they want with no consequences. Their parents either didn't care or gave up and decided it was easier to let them off than to discipline them.

Kylie, I had a betta cat once, she was betta dan all dem udder cats put togeddar. Sorry to hear you are sick, hope you get betta.

Good call, you should ask the people saying "Betta Fish" though, because those people aren't the people that are going to answer this post for you.

I could be because they pronounce the name incorrectly (BAY-tah), so when they tell people they got a BAY-tah, they're asked what kind (old vcr, Greek letter), so they have to specify it's a fish. They just get tired of being asked, so start saying (and writing) "betta (or beta) fish".

My pet peeve is the use of the term "fries" for the plural of fry, when fry is both singular and plural. When people ask what they should do with their bettas fries, it gives me a completely different visual. ;)

Hope you feel better soon!

You are so right. I have seen that applied to other fish as well, but it does seem very common with bettas. Maybe these are the same people that say tom cat? or Poodle dog? Just guessing. Or maybe it's a regional thing?

Sorry to hear you sick :( Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Hmm, that's a good question. I don't usually say betta fish, I usually just say betta. Maybe they're worried that people will get confused and think they're talking about the greek letter, beta? I doubt they are that intelligent, though....

When I first thought if betta, I thought of the Greek word. Beta is the second word of the Greek alphabet. So, they sound the same. Also, beta is related to atoms.

But, yes, I started to wonder also why we couldn't just say Betta instead of Betta fish. LOL.
Now, I just say Betta.

its almost a subconscious thing. I did run into a problem when I had one. i did say I have a "betta" and some people would say "huh? what?" so I would have to say "betta fish" before they got it.
