Well, there are many, many wonderful books by writers who never became famous. It's impossible to quantify this with precision, but out of every thousand people who write a truly wonderful book, one of them might become famous. And some writers become famous with books that aren't really very good.

Writing a wonderful book is a more attainable goal than becoming famous. You can control the quality of your book. You can't do much beyond writing a good book, though, to determine whether or not you will become famous for what you have written.

Go to your local B&N or Borders and take in all of the books they carry. Bare in mind that they only carry major publishers so there are probably four times more small publisher books available to buy.
Of the thousands of choices there are probably three or four dozen really successful writers. Maybe a dozen "famous" writers.
However, don't let that stop you from trying if it's your passion. Better to try your very best than to become middle-aged wondering "what if".

The odds of becoming a famous writer are slim to none, especially toward those that have problems spelling. If you wish to write for fun or profit begin by acquiring the handbook titled, "The Elements of Style" by Strunk and Williams. It is an invaluble reference tool for novice and professional alike.

Then start to write.

Note: Try to avoid using the old worn cliche "slim to none." I should have known better.

Slim to none. Look at how many authors you have in your bookcase. Multiply that by twenty. That's about how many fail. Sorry.
