It really just is a matter of opion what 'hard rock' is....everyone has a different idea of what they think it is....at the time Deep Purple was coming up they would have been considered hard rock.

You have some really good bands in your previous answers but I'd just like to add Motörhead. Slash is also pretty good when it's kind of him leading the other guys back in his GNR days, he has some great stuff that you can YouTube.
