The reason why humans are so interested in teaching monkeys, or any other animal, to speak a language is because we are interested in knowing whether or not these animals are capable not only of speech, but of cognition. Animals communicate in other ways, but it is very debatable whether or not this communication is the result of reflexes or thought. Knowing that other animals can speak, and think, will open many doors to further research in determining how/what/and why we can think.

Studying primates enables researchers to better understand language acquisition and apply that knowledge to humans in order to help those with communication difficulties.
