I have been working in a private school for 2 years. Now, the school want me to take training for upper elementary without pay. This training will take one month to complete. In lieu of no pay, I have to use my PTO. Unfortunately, my PTO is only 56 hrs. So, that means I only have pay for one week and the rest of the weeks no pay. The school is paying for the training but I have to buy my manuals and materials. Not to mention the gas. The training facility is 100+ miles from my home. The school made me feel that, it is my duty to take the training and I cannot say "no". Is this right? I tried searching the CA labor law and cannot find any answers. Your input is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

You have no rights, as a teacher. Your contract states that you will complete all required training for certification OUT OF YOUR OWN POCKET. Read your contract carefully.

You are receiving free education. Some people have to go to training in off-hours and pay for their training. If you really cannot afford it tell the school so and they might let you use future PTO.

i just heard a story of a senior at Duke where the graduation requirements changed, and overnight he was required to take three more classes, which forced him to attend an additional semester.......the lawyer on the radio told him, tuff luck.....schools are businesses and can make their own rules whenever they choose
