My all time favorite: the Composite Superman.

You're saying who...? I know, he's a real oldie. He appeared first back in the 60's.

He was Joe Meach, an out of work high diver, who tried to dive into a plastic tank of water from the top of the Daily Planet Building. But Superman noticed that the tank leaked out and only an inch of water was left, so he saved they guy's life, and gave him a job as a custodian at the Superman-Batman Museum.

Joe was consumed by envy and hatred, even though Supes saved his life!

One day, he was sweeping up near a display of statues of the Legion of Super Heroes, when lightning struck them and him. What the Legion didn't know was that the process they used to make the statues also duplicated their powers.

Joe Meach got ALL the powers of the ENTIRE Legion of Super Heroes! He could throw lightning, bounce, turn invisible, disguise himself, read minds, grow, shrink, etc, etc, etc, and he was as strong as Supergirl, Mon El and Ultra Boy put together...!

With all that power, the first thing he wanted to do was to kill Superman, Batman and Robin (why he had it in for the kid, I don't know.) But did he just fly up, grab them by the neck and squeeze till their heads popped like zits...? no, he had to go humiliate them first.

He looked ridiculous. His costume was half-Superman, half-Batman, and his face was green like Braniac.

(Of course, he put a lead lining under the ONE FOURTH of the Batman mask that covered his face, so Superman could not recognize him with his x-ray vision...!)

[Poor Robin... Compy didn't even use any part of his costume. He could at least have used the shorts and left his legs bare...!]

Anyhow, he was the toughest villain that Superman and Batman ever faced, and he would have killed them if his powers hadn't worn off just in time. He got amnesia when his powers wore off, and they didn't know who he was, so they were always afraid that he'd come back someday.

Years later, an alien who wanted revenge against Superman and Batman recreated the accident that gave Meach his powers. Once his powers returned, he wanted to destroy them again. And he would have, except that the alien took his powers away again at the end, when he had Superman and Batman helpless, because he wanted to deliver the death blow himself.

But Meach was in his right mind now, and jumped in front of the blast that was meant to kill them. Superman ahd Batman clobbered the alien and built a memorial to Meach, engraved: "He lived a villain, but he died a hero."

You can read the original story for free on the site 'Supermanthrougtheages'. Check it out, you'll enjoy it.

My choice would be DOOMSDAY - the freak of nature from the superman comics, if anyone remembers. This supervillian killed every superhero in his path, only to be stopped by superman, but not before killing him too. If a supervillian is able to kill superman, the most powerful superhero of all time, then he's got to be one hell of a guy.

I think it's Vilgax from Ben 10. He's a powerful warlord who has travelled the galaxy to find and retrieve the Omnitrix, a prototype weapon that allows the user to shift into different alien forms, at all costs.

I don't know if I'd call him the greatest, but I love the idea of mysterio. His helmet is a fishbowl and he has no actual powers. It is made very clear that everything he does is just special effects.
