Depends upon the state and your local laws... Also assuming you don't start a fire (Arson) that causes property damage or a death. In that case, the "fine" will be a lengthy stay in your state prison.

I hear dozens going off outside as I write. I live in a development outside of city limits, so we don't have those silly laws that nitpick everything! Though I wish they would stop setting them off after midnight!. We have over 15 stands within a couple of miles that sell fireworks. In answer to your question, if they are illegal where you live, go outside your city limits and do what you want.

You should come to Tennessee, apparently we have NO laws concerning fireworks here. My neighbors have been setting them off for a week and letting the fire fall on my car and the police are not the least bit concerned and say it's perfectly legal to set them off in or out of the city limits. Go figure. With all the dry conditions here, I can't imagine why, but finally figured it out...the fire dept is selling them.
