I placed him in a tub of warm water with 2.5 cups of warm water and 1 cup of gin. At first he jumped a bit, i assume it stung a bit because he had a really bad flesh eating ick that wasn't going away. As his breathing started to decline blood started flowing out of his gills! I didn't read anything about blood and now I fear that I hurt this poor fish... Can anyone tell me what happened or what it might have experienced? Blood started flowing about 10 seconds after he went in the solution... Of course once I started I stayed the course and once his respiration seemed to stop I placed the whole tub int the freezer to make sure he passed.

You should have read up a little more on the proper way to euthanize your fish because what ended up happening is that you went overboard with the alcohol. First you should anesthetize them with clove oil, then add the alcohol. Here is a link that explains it in full detail. http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-the-most-humane-way-to-euthanize-a-fish.htm

NEVER NEVER NEVER flush a fish!! Not only is that NOT going to kill it immediately (ending its suffering) but it also runs the risk of spreading its disease. (Dead or Alive the fish is still diseased). Your toilet water isnt treated for a fish so it still has chemicals that will kill it in there, and it will also end up in water that is not fit for the fish to be in (excrement, urine, etc). Also do not freeze, use baking soda, or alka seltzer - These are cruel. If you have the stomach for it, decapitation or crushing the head are viable options, but they require a brutal end and it MUST be done on the first hit or it makes the fish suffer even more.

The simplest way to euthanize a fish is with clove oil (a toothache remedy). Place the fish in a small container with enough tank water to cover him and add 6-10 drops of clove oil to the water. Stir it around so it will mix and he should go to sleep and stop breathing in just a few minutes. If he doesn't, in the case of larger fish, add 6-10 more drops until he is not moving. Once you are sure he is out, then place the container in the freezer for a couple hours.

Flushing a live fish is one of the most inhumane things you can do. It is worse than just throwing him out in the yard to die. There is no water down in the sewers to speak of, it is just urine and mushy sh*t. How would you (yahooislame) like to lay in this and suffocate because there is no water with O2 in it? Smashing him with a rock would be quicker and more humane than flushing him...

apparently it isn't a good way and the fish did suffer before he died. an effective way is to rest the fish on a firm surface and strike its head with a hard object. the aim is to instantly destroy its brain. this may sounds barbaric, but this method is effective if performed correctly. another way is to overdose of anaesthetic.

other methods of fish euthanasia are not considered humane. methods such as freezing, boiling, decapitation are not acceptable and are believed to cause suffering to the fish. also flushing a fish alive down the toiler IS TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE.

Smack it with a hammer (wrap it in a few paper towels first). I know it sounds bad, but its over in less than a second. I also heard you could put the fish in a bowl of water, and add rubbing alcohol. It isn't as quick as a hammer, but it does the job.

i kill them mthe same way as i kill mice, place them in a bag and slam on the corner of a table, for larger fish i would say cutting off their head is a good option, or driving a nail thru their brain would be quicker though, sorry if this sounds cruel but a quick death is much less painful, a posioning just makes us feel better about it becsuse we see less blood.

Strange way to euth... Fish have open circulatory systems so this makes a lot of sense if you consider that he is basically a hemophiliac. The solution just allow it flow I would guess.

I think a whole cup of gin to 2.5 cups of water is way too strong, it should be much less than that.

u r hurtin the poor fish! the best way to euthanize a fish is to put it in a tub of water n put the tub in a freezer.. tt will do! because they r cold blooded animals they wont feel the temperature dropping n so they wont suffer. slowly their respiration rate will drop till they jus die peacefully.. next time to eunthanize any fish jus use this method k? poor fish... but its nt ur fault cuz at least ur intentions r gd.. =)
