I love this question. I always thought there were people who did not get the joke and were cheering the Colbert Report while the rest of us were getting a good laugh. But I can't blame this entirely on the kool-aid drinking conservatives slurping up what Colbert is serving, because he does it so well.

He was a liberal when he first came on TV. Then he realized that if he played a conservative he could make a lot more money. He has fans who are liberal and enjoy his spoofs of conservatives. he has fans who are conservatives who love what he says without realizing he is being sarcastic.
