In terms of basketball, NOBODY can touch Jordan in terms of energy, passion, and competitiveness. Sure, there may be players more explosive, bigger, faster, taller, stronger, or more fundamentally sound but nobody worked harder to improve his game on both ends of the court. Michael Jordan is one of those players who you can really say is a better offensive or defensive player because he excels really well on both ends of the court. Basketball is an energy sport and to be aggressive on both ends of the court requires dedication, great work ethics, and unyielding passion for the sport. He may not have been a great baseball player but the momentum of that sport fails to come even close to basketball. MJ was also the # 1 most recognized sports figure during his reign in the sports world and that says a lot for one of the greatest basketball player the world has ever seen.

Basketball athlete, yes. He played basketball VERY well, but was awful at baseball (didn't hit his weight at the A level). The most outstanding athlete of all time? Get real.
As an athlete in basketball, Wilt Chamberlain also held Big 8 (now the Big 12) track records for 440 dash, high jump and triple jump. After he retired from professional basketball, he single-handedly brought popularity to professional volleyball as one of their best players.
How about Jim Thorpe as the most outstanding athlete of all time? He played professional football, professional baseball and professional basketball. He also won the Olympic decathalon and pentathalon. He's in the NFL Hall of Fame and was a star track athlete.
Or try Bo Jackson. The guy was an all star in both the NFL and major league baseball. He also considered joining the US Olympic team as a sprinter after qualifying in the 60 yd dash his freshman and sophomore years at Auburn.

Hmm there is Tiger Woods, Roger Federer, Wayne Gretzkey...MJ ranks up there as the most dominant player of his sport, but not the most dominant athlete. I think its unfair to say a athlete is more dominant than another if they play different sports, but I would have to go with "the great one" Gretzkey as the greatest athlete of all time.

ESPN claimed he was the greatest athlete of the twentieth century.... excuse me while I laugh!..Ahh!..HAAHH!..HAAHH!..HAHHHH!!but that just isn't the truth.
ESPN was as prone to hype and endorsements as most Jordan-supporters. After all, who supported Jordan's #1-ranked sports biography? Jordan's clothing company. Wow. Now, that's unbiased. I wonder how much money Nike pays them each year in advertising. ESPN's credibility has often been questioned, especially in college football, where they have been accused of slanting the public's view of strong teams or Heisman Trophy winners, in favor of players and games that their sister company, ABC, televises.
Athleticism? Hardly! Jordan's not even possessing the most athleticism out of basketball players. He didn't compete in track (unlike Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain, who were champion track athletes, for instance). Carl Lewis, Jim Thorpe, Babe Didrickson-Zaharus, and Bo Jackson were all more athletic than Jordan!
Winning? Sorry. Put Rocky Marciano, Yogi Berra, and Bill Russell ahead of Jordan.
Dominated the most areas of his sport? Sorry. Try guys like Barry Bonds, Joe DiMaggio, Babe Ruth, Wilt Chamberlain, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, and Walter Payton ahead of Jordan.
Broke the most records? Wilt Chamberlain and Wayne Gretsky are far, far ahead of Jordan.
Impact on sport? Jackie Robinson. 'Nuff said.
to easy..........................lol

Jordan is a great athlete, to be sure, However decathletes are, all around, the best athletes on the planet.
Notice, you did not say basketball player, you said athlete!

I agree. Mike is more transcendent than any player ever. He up lifted his sport and took it to another level. Every kid, man, woman, or alien wanted to "Be like Mike"! His accomplishments are beyond most players in any era, and his talent and style of play will never come again. He personifies "unique" in every sense.

Definitely up there, though it's difficult to evaluate in a team sport. Jesse Owens might be my pick.
