I have an older kitchen that we do plan on doing a major remodel in about 5 years or so. But we want to install a disposal now. We currently have a dishwasher installed and no room to install an air gap that heard about from the retailer I will purchase the disposal from. I have PVC and no available holes in my current cast iron sink to install an air gap.

Is this something I have to install or is there a way around it that my plumber would be okay installing?

Hi, I refused to let the installers cut a hole in my sink! I installed the dishwasher ,installed the Garbage disposal, Matter of fact, I put all new pipes in under the sink too! All by my little self! But back to your question, You can by-pass that, but you won't get a Plumber to do it. I think it's a code that you have to have a air gap if installed. Well not in mine! And it works just dandy, has never backed up,clogged, or any trouble at all! Just keep the drain hose from the Dishwasher to the Disposal High up. Do it yourself, it's fun and easy than you feel proud! Bye

Garbage Disposal Air Gap

If your dishwasher is already installed, as it must be, then you should already have an air gap somewhere under the sink, (they don't necessarily have to be installed in the countertop). When you install the disposal, you probably won't have to remove the plug in the hole for the dishwasher hook-up, unless you'd prefer the dishwasher waste to go through the disposal. The drain from the dishwasher must already be plumbed into the drains under the sink or it wouldn't function. You can install the disposal on the off side of the sink, (instead of the side that has the drain dropping straight down, the horizontal line will just hook up into the disposal side.

I would, as it would bother me (probably wont make a difference though) Also be sure to connect a relief valve to the line... so the dishwasher drain line should goto a V connector, one end goes to the garbage disposal insert the other goes to a air inlet at the top of the sink. If you need to drill a hole on the sink top (i had to) be very sure you have the right bit, they make a very expensive bit for drills that will not shatter/chip the porcelain. If you plug directly into the dishwasher and the garbage disposal is clogged while the dishwasher is draining it will backup into the dishwasher. Best case scenario it will spit dirty water into your dishwasher, worse case it will break the pump, resulting in a costly repair.... With the relief valve it will just spray out the valve...

the air gap on your dishwasher is so your dishwasher can pull air
before you install your disposal on the side of it you will see a 3/4 pipe on it put a flat head screwdriver in it and hit it with a hammer gentle. a plug a plastic will fall inside the disposal
get it out before install. install disposal. unhook dishwasher drain hose from air gap and hook it on the 3/4 pipe on side of disposal, remove air gap and throw away you will no longer need it. your dishwasher can now pull air though your disposal

All an air gap does is keep the drain from siphoning the water completely out of the dishwasher. Utilize the drain connection on the disposal....no airgap is needed...Air gaps do get clogged up and will dump water all over the area that it is mounted in...so there are cons to having these.

The air gap is for the dishwasher, not the disposal.
When you install your garbage disposal, it will have a built-in drain outlet for the d/w.
No problem.

the garbage disposal is hooked up under sink replacing the water waste line there is a plastic pipe on the disposal that you have to tap on center and remove the plastic disk, the dishwasher hose is hooked up to this hole, there is anther connection that goes to your waste pipe or j- trap.
