what is the best natural way to keep bugs off you garden?

the bugs have had a field day on a few of my plants i have a 4 year old and hes bad to pick things out of the garden like tomatoes and such so i dont use chemicals does anyone know a natural way to hanle this problem

The "best natural" way is with predatory insects like lady bugs, lace wings, assassin bugs, praying mantis, predatory wasps and the like. You can purchase lady bugs and mantis, however, it may be too late by then. Your only option is to try a homemade concoction of 1tsp dish soap and 1tsp of hot pepper sauce to kill off the little buggers. Hand picking is also very effective but time consuming. As for chemicals, Sevin is probably the lease toxic when dry, but you need to use it at night when all the beneficial insects are gone and where pets and people won't be in contact with it. Once it dries it is okay, but the veggies will need to be washed before being consumed. Personally, I just accept my loses and do what I can the natural way. Good luck.

There are a number of organic pesticides available. Insecticidal soaps, neem oil and products containing pyrethium are commonly available. Milky spore or bacillus thurengiensis, is specifically used against caterpillars such as the cabbage looper and others.

Sevin as recommended above is a chemical pesticide. The problem with chemical pesticides is that they kill the good bugs also.

The addition of natural predators such as ladybugs, predatory wasps and praying mantis' can also help. The predatory wasps aren't the same as wasps that will sting humans so you don't have to worry about them and your family.

Well predatory insect are nice but often not a long term solution, tobacco will keep a lot of insects away, rosemary is good for some, cucumbers for ants, citronella or marigold for mosquitos
