Death Penalty? And how long do you think a murderer should sit on death row before he pays the price?

Yes. And it is something that should happen right away. These people are not exactly a positive contribution to society.. they are just taking up space. I say get rid of them. They don't deserve to live. They chose their own fate when they chose to take another person's life.

The process takes so long because of the risk of executing an innocent person.

As of now, 124 people who were sentenced to death have been released with evidence of their innocence. Of these, at least 50 had already served more than a decade. If the process were speeded up, we would certainly execute innocent people.

Why does this process take so long?? Our appeals process is not set up to take a second look at whether a convicted person was actually innocent. Its purpose is to make sure that the original trial was fair and in accord with constitutional standards. What to many people looks like lawyers searching for loopholes is really the search for a way to present evidence of innocence.

DNA does not guarantee that we will not execute an innocent person. It is available at less that 10% of all murder scenes.

Life without parole is now on the books in 48 states. It means what it says, is sure and swift (necessary for a punishment to deter others) and costs much less than the death penalty. Like the death penalty it incapacitates criminal (prevents recidivism.)

The death penalty is not a deterrent (homicide rates are higher in states and nations with the death penalty than in those without it.) It is neither sure nor swift

Absolutely YES! Why should a murderer live a life of free bees, paid by the tax payer,( that's us!) as a reward for killing an Innocent person. My life was threatened by someone and I didn't do anything to harm anyone. Some people treat life like it is nothing. Murder is on the rampage in our country because the murderer feels he will not have to pay with his own life.

If he is not proven innocent within 6 months, execute him!

No I actually don't think the death penalty is right.

The only time I think killing is acceptable is when you are defending something from a threat.

If a person has been locked up in jail without weapons, then they are no longer a threat and you no longer need to defend anyone from them.

I believe it is fair. I'm going to sound absolutely horrid, but I think anyone who takes another's life deserves to die. They shouldn't have to wait long, though.

Oh, and to all the people who are saying we should just let them rot in jail- How much room do you think those jails have? Little to none. US jails are incredibly overcrowded as it is...What would happen if every killer in the US was just thrown in jail? Many, many murders happen every day. That would be a lot of murderers in only a few jail cells left.

If he/she is 90-100% cconvected it should be the day of the judgment. We pay millions of dollars everyday to support people like that to live better then we do.

Only if there is undeniable evidence. There are so many people who are actually not guilty. I think it should be a year. Too soon is too easy for them.

no.
It is not right.
A murderer should not be taught a lesson by being murdered.
They should just do life. That would be more humane and would teach the murderer a better lesson.

no, i dont believe 2 wrongs make a right. if someone is being punished for killing, you dont punish them by killing them. that just shows killing is ok if you are part of the government.
