Is this scene based on ledgend or myth? Or is it purely the imagination of the writers? If it is based on the myth... what is the story?

I know that the ark "exists", but what I want to know is if what happened to them after it was opened is based on a myth or did the writers just make it up?

This is very deeply based in Judaic tradition. The Ark reputedly had a number of defensive capabuilities. Once two of the people carrying it slipped and touched it - and they died instantly. ALso, the Ark was carried at the head of armies and threw off what were much like laser beams, killing the emeny. Also, once a year a selected official went into the Holy of Holies with it - and if he came back out they assumed it was a good year. Sometimes they didn't come out.

The Ark was a fascinating artifact, on people are still looking for today.

There are lots of stories and myths about what happened to the ark. No one is sure.

There are a couple stories in the Bible about the ark that show it as a powerful icon because God was protective of it. In one, an invading country, the Philistines, had captured the ark and put it in one of their god's temples. In the morning, the god had fallen over and broken in pieces, and all the people started dying of a nasty disease. They got rid of the ark.

And there is a (another Bible) story where the Israelites were moving the ark on a cart, and when it got unsettled and a guy thought it was falling, he reached out to steady it and dropped dead when he touched it.

So, in the movie ... exact story, naw ... right concept ... absolutely.

The Ark of the Covenant Is a very real item that still exist today... Just ask the Catholic Church for they has tried to steal it several times from the Ethiopians.......... Also in the movie, Them opening the Ark was fiction as well as them carrying the Ark anywhere.. For carrying the Ark can only be done by members of a certain priesthood.... Also anyone else touching the Ark would meet with certain death immediately after touching it for the only non-priest that touched it and survive was King David, and the high priest only..... The Movie was was fiction.. But the Ark is not.... And yes it is really located in Ethiopia.......................................................................................

The opening might be myth but the Bible tells a story that the ark could not be touched my human hands and carried on the long poles you saw in the movie. The story in the Bible even said that at one time the ark was almost dropped, and a man trying to something good by catching it, thus touching it with his hands and was killed

2 Sam 6:6-7
When they came to the threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah reached out and took hold of the ark of God, because the oxen stumbled. The LORD's anger burned against Uzzah because of his irreverent act; therefore God struck him down and he died there beside the ark of God. (NIV)

No one knows for sure where the Ark of the Covenant went. Some speculate that God took it into heaven. Others state that it was placed into hiding...

I'm trying to remember what happened in the movie (it's been years since I saw the movie), but in the Old Testament, a person could not touch the ark, unless they were the appointed high priest.

The ark is referenced in the bible. There is no proof of its existence. The scene in the movie is fiction
