In about a year, im looking to buy a yorkie. A small one, like the most 5 pounds. I heard they get liver shunts sometimes. I was wondering if they are born with them, or if they just get them. Would you ask the breeder if they do, or do all breeders get them tested, and i know not to get that one obviously, if they do. I was also wondering if a yorkie would be unhealthy if it was like 3 or 4 pounds, would it be more expensive in vet bills? Please help me!! Thanks!

Liver shunts happen when a puppy is born and one of the blood supplies to the liver isn't shut off when it should have at birth. It happens most often in smaller breeds, but isn't terribly common. I've seen several cases in 20 years. Can't tell without blood tests if the pup has a shunt. Elevated liver enzymes can indicate it, and an ultrasound by a specialist can confirm it. Surgery is rather expensive, but can be successfully done. We don't recommend the very tiny so called "tea cup" puppies, as they do tend to have higher incidence of health problems.

There isn't any such factor as a "teacup" Yorkie. The regular for Yorkies is "to not exceed 7 kilos", so a small puppy even at the greater finish of the dimensions. (Provided that you just receive from a legitimate breeder who truthfully breeds to fulfill the regular.) Yorkies are satisfactory puppies. If you're for the reason that getting one, I might strongly urge you to do a little study at the breed first. It will train you on crimson flags related to the breed (equivalent to use of the time period 'teacup') and higher permit you to admire and choose a excellent breeder and puppy.
