A modern-set book is Pants on Fire by Meg Cabot and it's actually pretty good--most of her books are, such as the already mentioned How To Be Popular and my personal favorite, Avalon High, about the King Arthur story retold in a modern high school.
My favorite author, though, is Tamora Pierce. She writes a wonderful teen fantasy series. Her first is the Alanna series, followed by the Immortals Quartet and Protector of the Small, but I love her Daughter of the Lioness series (Trickster's Choice, Trickster's Queen). They are my absolute favorite books ever.
Hope this helps. :)

If you like mysteries then you are in for a treat. Anne George wrote 8 Southern Sister books and they are the funniest...they give you a look at the southern woman and she is a hoot Sadly Anne passed away several years ago but the books are wonderful and they are:
Murder On A Bad Hair Day
Murder On A Girl's Night Out
Murder Boogies With Elvis
Murder Runs In the Family
Murder Gets A Life
Murder Shoots The Bull
Murder Carries a Torch
Murder Makes Waves
please try atleast one of them and you will be hooked

I Am the Messenger, by Markus Zusak, is funny. Not a full-out comedic book, but it's still funny.
The Princess Bride, by William Goldman is also hilarious.

If you're into video games and best friends stories I think you might like my novel GAMEPLAYER: The Genesis Portal.
GAMEPLAYER follows the adventures of Nine-dog, Gator and Louie; three racially diverse buddies growing up in the skateboarding, video gaming obsessed Santa Monica, California beach life-style.
It's available at the normal online sites like amazon, B&N, Borders, etc.
You can check it out free by reading the prologue on my site www.myspace.com/gameplayerbook.
Not meant as a commercial just a suggestion,
Gary Anderson
