My desktop is basically going to be used by my 1rst grader, if needed, and my husband. I need to know if I need to set up a wireless network. And how do I do it? Do I need a wireless PC card for my desktop or only for my laptop. Is there anything special that I need to do to my PC to have the capability of the notebook and PC on the internet at the same time?

well first question are you on dialup or dsl/cable? if dialup don't even bother. if ya got dsl or cable best way just get a wireless router to plug in to the modem then you can keep the pc hardwired which is faster and the laptop can be wired or wireless. most new laptops come with wireless built in plus an ethernet port

Asking to go wired/wireless is like asking for which car to buy: it totally depends on your needs.

The first thing to ask is if cabling will be an issue. Will you have to lie the cable across a floor or attach it to walls, or will the computers be right next to the router? Do you want to be able to use the laptop from anywhere in your home, or will it be in a fixed location where a network cable is feasible?

Bottom line is to go for a wired network. Wireless networks are great and do provide flexibility, but they are also not as secured as wired because wireless is essentially a radio broadcast that can be detected. Wireless security has improved dramatically for the better, though, so don't run away from it in a hurry.

I'm using wireless myself because whoever designed my apartment put the phone jack in the entrance room, yet my PC's location is nowhere close to it and would require a long network cable lying across the kitchen floor. Wireless was the obvious choice, and I have good security in place.

If you decide to go wireless, then you will need a wireless adapter for your desktop if it didn't come with one. Your laptop will most likely have one internally, which is the case with most modern laptops, and companies still include RJ-45 ports where the network cable connects. Somewhere on the laptop will state which wireless bands it supports (b, g, n). A wireless router would be good to have, for it makes internet sharing very scalable. In any event, look at how you want to setup your computers for your business, then see if wired or wireless is the way to go.

A web search on SET UP WIRELESS NETWORK will give you a good start.

Depends on if you want to move the laptop around the house. If you want to take it around the house and not use a wired connection then get a wireless router. There are security considerations.

The wired connection is in theory,is more secure than a wireless connection. There is always a chance the wireless connection can be intercepted by hackers.

You do not need a wireless card for the desktop. You can keep that wired. It really depends on how much money you want to spend. If you have lots of money then you can go wireless on both. Personally, if it didn't matter if I move the laptop around, I would not go wireless at all. Just use a wired connection for it.

I have my desktop hard wired to a router and my laptop connected wireless to the same router. Both computers are networked together. I did have a friend set up the security of the router's wireless signal so nobody else can access it or my computers.

No, wireless is just that, wireless; in nearly all characteristics besides wireless it is still inferior to a normal wired network. It only needed as your need to go wireless with your own circumstance, but a laptop can do wireless or wired either way.

if u want to use the 2 computer's at the same time, u need to buy a wireless router. most of the routers right now, would have wired capabilities as well. since you wont be moving your desktop u can hardwire the desktop and buy a wireless card for the laptop. that would be cheaper. i suggest you buy linksys wireless router.

No. All you need to do is get a wireless router. Linksys router system. You can get these at your local Radio Shack and are fairly cheap, depending on the size router you need. I had one and it had two antena. It worked wonderfully for my PC and my former room mate's PC.
