Why do people lie about a baby's looks?

Question

I noticed people don't have any problem with saying so and so is plain looking, or so and so is unattractive, but when it comes to ugly babies, people lie. For instance, people posted these pics of their (ugly, IMO) babies

http://www.naturallycurly.com/curltalk/viewtopic.php?t=107852, and everyone is all: "how adorable," but I've seen some women on that site who are unattractive post pictures of their hair or something, and no one showers them with fake compliments. Why do babies always have to be "adorable?" I think I have a temptation to not lie when it comes to ugly babies because we're sort of threatened by the new generation coming along and replacing us, and we think well, at least we should have some good looking people in our place. I know just for saying this that I'll end up with ugly babies. Why do you feel compelled to compliment ugly babies, and if you don't, what do you say?

I know what you mean. Everybody's baby is "so cute!", even if they look like a clump of sausages stuck together. I just can't gush over babies -- I've never had any, I've never wanted any, but every time a friend of co-worker has a kid or one of THEIR kids has a kid, it's "isn't she CUTE? Isn't he PRECIOUS?"

No. My sister's son was UUUUUGLY as baby and he's still an UGLY adult.

People simply tell people how cute their babies are in order not to hurt the new mothers feelings. It is an exciting time and love is blind however most ugly babies start getting a bit cuter around 2-3 months so its just a little lie in most cases.Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. ! I also believe noone would want to be told their baby was ugly so they don't put it out there to others.

It is very rude to insult a baby's looks. They are all ugly when born but they are the product of two people who put their genes into the baby so you are also calling both parents ugly. Babies are adorable no matter what they look like. Also you may not really know what they are supposed to look like. When my great niece was born my boyfriend said her head was too big but it wasn't babies have big heads and the photo showed it too much. When he saw her in person I asked them to unwrap her hands so he could see her little fingers he had never seen a little baby before. She has down syndrome but nobody would ever call her ugly she is still an adorable baby. Nobody would ever say they weren't lucky to get her as a daughter. Even if she was born deformed she would have still been adorable.

Because babies can't help the way they look...duh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As you get older you take care of yourself and do things to yourself to make you look better. Women, wear makeup, do their hair, get their nails done, etc. Same as men it seems nowadays will go to great lengths to better their appearance.
Babies are innocent and yes, some are ugly, but you can't tell the parents "what an ugly baby". That's rude. Again, they can't help the way they look.
If you think a baby is ugly, than don't say anything. Keep your mouth shut and move on.

okay.. granted not all babies have been blessed with "cuteness"... but to tell their parents that- thats pretty harsh. if i had an ugly child (knock on wood) ... i don't think i would want others to tell me so. its an infant.., thats so cruel to call them ugly to their parents. i say, if u don't have anything nice to say; don't say anything at all.. just say, "hes/ shes grown so big!... wow".. that shall suffice.
