They were either burned, drowned, hanged, or crushed under a pile of rocks. Then came Martin Luther and the Reformation, then beheadings were added to the mix.

They were usually "tried" (burned at the stake or drowned) as witches and heretics. If they survived the ordeal, then they were considered witches. If they didn't, then it was assumed that they went to Heaven.
