Runnings Windows XP home editions. Trying to do a total restore on the hard drive. All my data has been backed up on a memory stick and trying to do a destructive restore. I had made the restore CD's when I purchased the computer. It goes thru the process until it gets to disk 5 and then pops up an error message "preload\data9.inp" unable to load then it gives an option to retry or abort. I have done both and tried to start all over again but I get the same problem. Any suggestions?

You need a new disk 5 dude. I work for a software company and we have to install applications on IBM computers. The software is burned onto a cd. Sometimes the CDs are real crappy and they give us errors. We just throw them away and order more and then we use the new ones and usually they'll work. It's the luck of the draw, with these things. LOL

Good luck, just reburn disk 5 to another disk.

Sounds like a corrupted Disk 5.
But what you are doing is not a "destructive" restore.

If you want to clean up the PC so that if "functions as new" then you should simply do a full format of the hard drive and then reinstall all your other software. Since you have all your data backed up, a full format is a reasonable thing to do.

If you'd like to format the hard drive simply put the XP disk in the CD drive and shut down the PC. Then boot up the PC and the XP cd should boot up. It will as if you want to do a "repair installation" or a "full install". Select the full install and it will run the setup and install of XP less all the updates from Microsoft.

You could also choose the "repair" install if you are having functionality problems in general with your software and/or the OS. Sometimes this will rectify the headaches you're having.

Hope this helps.
