Jim Bowie's participation in the Texas Revolutionary War along with Davy Crockett's rallying to the Texian cause gave the Texas independence movement more publicity than it otherwise might have achieved. Before Bowie moved to Texas in 1830, his reputation as a card shark, slave trader, ladies' man, and entrepreneur/ adventurer was already well established along with the idea that Bowie could successfully weld a very large knife.
In September 1835, Stephen F. Austin awarded Bowie the title of colonel, and he became a commander of the volunteer army. Bowie's skirmish with a Mexican detachment of 100 cavalry and 100 infantry on October 28, 1935, furthered enhanced his persona as a frontiersman. When the Mexicans attacked Bowie's 92 horsemen, the Texans suffered only one fatality while they fatally wounded 16 Mexican soldiers.
In January 1836, Bowie arrived in San Antonio with 30 volunteers from Goliad, but he collapsed from tuberculosis on February 24, 1836, and was confined to a cot. Nevertheless, he perished along with the other Alamo defenders on March 6, 1836, receiving several gun shots in the head.

James Bowie was not important in the Texas revolutionary war, for any deeds during it, he wa already a living legend of the Mississippi river, a well known character in his own time, it is his status as a living icon of the rough frontiersmen folk lore, so well loved by the general public, that even though he did little at the Alamo, and was bed ridden prior to the final battle, his legend carried him into the folk lore of texas independence, Davey Crockett is similar, already a living legend, more so than Bowie, but he did fight in the final battle, which even though a loss, it was the ralleypoint for the futre victory, and the spirit of texas personified by those who died for Texas independence.
