Ferrets were once banned in many US states, but most of these laws were rescinded in the 1980s and 90s as they became popular pets. Ferrets are still illegal in California under Fish and Game Code Section 2118 and the California Code of Regulations.
Additionally, "Ferrets are strictly prohibited as pets under Hawaii law because they are potential carriers of the rabies virus"; the territory of Puerto Rico has a similar law.
Ferrets are also restricted by individual cities, such as, Washington, DC, Beaumont, Texas, Columbia, Missouri, New York City, and Bloomington, Minnesota. They are also prohibited on many military bases. A permit to own a ferret is needed in other areas, including Rhode Island. Illinois does not require a permit to merely possess a ferret, but a permit is required to breed ferrets. It was once illegal to own ferrets in Dallas, Texas, but the current Dallas City Code for Animals includes regulations for the vaccination of ferrets.

I sell ferrets in Missouri.
Different states, such as California, (illegal to purchase) are regulating the sale of ferrets because of the animal's ability to kill native wildlife, when ferrets accidentally escape or are no longer wanted as pets and released.
The general population doesn't realize the damage an introduced species does to native animals. Ferrets will eat anything they can catch including: birds, snakes and nearly any other small animal.
Our policy is to let anyone return a ferret for any reason and we place for adoption for free.
Some other pet shops are like us but lots are not.
I don't want the state regulating what I can sell or the environment damaged so this plan benefits everyone. Ferrets can get and carry rabies and distemper also.

Wow - all these reponses - and none accurate!
Ferrets are legal pets in the United States except for:
- California
- Hawaii
- the city of New York
The reasoning is because they feel that if pet ferrets were to get loose they'd have a detrimental effect on the environment because they'd eat birds, etc. Fact is, though, there's no evidence of roving bands of feral ferrets and most ferrets wouldn't last very long at all outside our homes.

They're only illegal in certain states, like California. I think it's because if the ferrets get loose or are released into the wild, they will cause damage to the ecosystem.

I think they are only illegal in certain states. I know they're illegal in California, but I'm pretty sure they're legal in Nevada. Although, I have no idea why, they seem harmless.

They aren't illegal all over the U.S., just certain states.
They believe them to be pests and to carry diseases. Also to possibly upset the ecosystems. This is mostly in the western states.
Ferrets are amazing pets.
