oh hell yeah, I cleaned it spotless 3 days ago and now there's clothes and shopping bags and rubbish EVERYWHERE, you can't even see the carpet!

A while back, my kids were struggling with the same problem. One thing that we realized was that they had too much stuff (our fault) and clean up quickly became overwhelming to them. We weeded a lot of items out and found that they played with things more frequently and had an easier time (not perfect time) cleaning up. Your daughter is 4 so telling her what to do and expecting it always to be done, may be unreasonable. I would suggest that you help her to clean up at the same time every day for a while. This will be good modeling for her as well as preventing the task from getting out of hand. Once this has become a regular routine, usually just telling her it is time to clean up may be all it takes. If things got out of hand, we used a black plastic bag to pack up toys that were consistently on the floor. There were a few tears, but the toys were quickly forgotten. Later, it was fun to unpack the black bag if we felt our kids were ready for them again. Good luck.
