in their own, separate, domestic sphere -- even as they were out there campaigning for temperance and abolition, against prostitution, and so on. By modern standards this is hopelessly contradictory, but at the time it made perfect sense. Explain how women could argue against female participation in politics and, at the same time, lobby so tirelessly on the great public issues of the day.

Your question is very puzzling and confusing to me.

I think the "Declaration of Sentiments," written in 1848 and presented over 300 men and women met in Seneca Falls, New York for the First Womens' Rights Convention is a clear statement of what activist women were seeking during this period.

The same thing happened to blacks under the Jim Crow laws. The whole separate but equal idea. Women in politics and most businesses was considered to be unfeminine or mannish. And only suited for women who had inclinations that were not openly talked about at the time. (Re: gay). But they did believe that women show be able to control their own fortunes (instead of having any male able to do it for them) and have rights from abusers.

Personally, I don't think it makes any damn difference; its just that it "causes" some individuals to believe they possess the very essence of being human. "women are so often dependents"; however, not only to men, but each other as well. We, also, since you had it first, depended upon you men to get the vote. I, still, say in our own realm it is you men who depend upon us; for example, you don't prefer your own sex or masturbation, you depend upon us for sex; you don't prefer your own kind, you depend upon us for your emotional gratification; other than your mommy; that is. No, I'm not going to include cooking and cleaning. In our world you follow our lead; the woman's world that is, which includes, our emotions, our personalities and the like; while, we follow you in your realm, which makes us both leaders; first one, then the other.

I'm not an expert on thjs subject at all...but my best guess is that either they were hypochrites, or they were lobbying on issues they believed to be impacting the "woman's sphere" in some way.
