1. ProChoice doesn't mean that we will choose to abort. I have a prochoice friend who had a surprise pregnancy. She chose to keep it for reasons beyond religion. Aborted children are generally raised in homes ill-fit, (i.e., they are born to young parents--which may risk the life of the child and mother, if the mother doesn't want the child, it is unlikely that the child will be properly cared for--there is a wealth of literature on the cognitive, emotional and behavioral effects of maturnal neglect). Many aborted children are aborted also when the child is known to have a serious congenital disorder.
2. To me, the root of the problem is where we consider human life begins. The child's neural development in the first trimester is about equivalent to a mouse. eeg's can't be detected until end of 1st trimester. In many legal contexts, the age of viability varies. Mostly because it's difficult to establish what defines life (i.e., at what level of neural development is the fetus considered "human", makes you ask, why are fetuses innocent?). The vast majority of abortions are done within the first 8 weeks. Only 4% of abortions are done longer than 15 weeks--mostly because of health problems.
3. There has been some interesting criminological research on a link between abotion and the violent crime drop in the 90s.
4. Not all liberals support abortion. I am one who supports the law as is, with perhaps a few more limitations (such as more strict on the lengths of time, reasons for aborting). My girlfriend, who I consider to be more liberal than I, is prolife.
5. I do, however, consider anyone old enough to be tried as an adult of sound mind viable.
6. Some are opposed to the death penalty for reasons other than moral ones. For example, the very fact that a large portion (can only be estimated--even estimations are based on known cases, which are likely to vastly underestimate the real #'s) of tried death row's have been proven innocent! Many were convicted at a time when technological and investigative methods were archaic. Also, recently, there have been many changes in the way eyewitnesses are interviewed (see psychological research on memory and eyewitness testimony).
6. It's not always applied fairly.
8. The death penalty is EXPENSIVE--far more than life without parole (see link). This SHOULD hit home for you TRUE conservatives.

I actually am a cautious supporter of abortion. I feel that it should be allowed in extreme cases, such as rape, incest, when the mother's life is on the line or when the fetus has a disorder which would severely impact it's mental and/or physical capabilities.

As for the death penalty, I do support it in cases where there is no shadow of a doubt that the person to be put to death committed the crime.

Maybe this liberal shouldn't have answered the question... lol. I would think that other liberals may think this way because the fetus hasn't entered the world yet, so it hasn't achieved full "personhood" whereas the person on death row has.

It is the big debate over point of life.

A fetus is not able to survive independently of from the mother, and is therefore by textbook definition not an independent life.
Point of life distinction, is used in variable legal contexts, not just the abortion debate. An accident or injury causing the loss of a fetus is not considered murder. Also taking birth control (which often blocks the implantation of a fertilized egg) is again non controversial and not considered murder.

However the end of an established life (regardless of how objectionable it may have been) being determined by a panel of ones peer makes some a little uncomfortable.

A pro choice person does not see a fetus as a life.

Because I don't consider a fetus a human life with rights any more than I consider my arm a being with rights. As for the death penalty, if it could be applied fairly, I might support it, but when you have innocent people getting convicted all the time, it isn't worth it.

I am anti-death penalty because inmates die sooner if sentenced to life than if sentenced to death. And since they do not have as many appeals... they cost less. AND with ALL the recent exonerations of people who were imprisoned for crimes they did not commit, life sentences make more sense.

Why do you think you have the right to control what women do, and with all the people on death row that have been released thanks to DNA testing, why do you still want to kill them, you are a very sick person ! Stop thumping you're bible and leave you're god at church. For god so loved the world and all the little innocent children of the world that he killed everyone except for Noah, noah's wife, his sons and their wives . You're God is to evil for me!

I'm still trying to figure out how it's worse to destroy an embryo for stem cell research than it is to be incinerated as medical waste. Normally, I can force myself to see an issue from the opposing point-of-view...but not on this.

1) Family has a successful fertility treatment. Remaining embryos are destroyed in an incinerator as medical waste.

2) Family has a successful fertility treatment. Remaining embryos are signed over to a lab for stem cell research, which also destroys the embryos.

I don't see a difference, personally. Somehow, the NeoConservatives do though. Wish they'd share it with us so we could understand too.
