The three I would choose as tops in the genre are:
-2001: A Space Odyssey
-The Time Machine (1960 version)
and
-Forbidden Planet
All three are visually exciting, creative stories of humanity and technology, containing memorable scenes, concepts and images. All are explorations not only in space and time but in human thought and imagination.

1. Metropolis (1927)
2. Forbidden Planet (1956)
3. The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)
I'm a big believer that a film has to stand the test of time to be considered a classic.

The three Sci-Fi films that changed the genre for their times were;
This Island Earth. The first film to use models and film them proportionately to the scenery and have the explosions look to scale.
2001: A Space Odyssey. They used movement in the space scenes to give a three dimensionality to the ships.
