My dad alwasy told me it was important to use the same kind of oil consistently? Can I go from what I use now to the best oil without damage and what kind of oil is the best?

As long as you drain out the oil. there are a lot of good oils out there. Mobil One, Royal Purple, and a bunch of others.

your dad was talking about the cars of the 60's and 70's, the cars of today the engines are much better as far as durability and engine life, yes you can change oils in your newer car just don't mix synthetic with regular oil, it's ok to use one or the other, it doesn't make any difference, and mobil 1 and royal purple are probably 2 of the best oils on the market and they are synthetic.
