I have no idea why music is culturally significant.
Maybe its comforting for people to have something in common.
Music is just magical. I don't think I'm just speaking for myself when i say, it makes you FEEL.
When its done properly, the right lyrics and the right melody can release emotions in you that you never knew you had, or that you had trouble expressing or even identifying.
When i come across lyrics i can relate to its so exhilarating. For me its just the feeling that someone else knows exactly how i feel. They put into words exactly how i feel, found the words to say things i didn't know how to say ... it makes me feel less alone!
And sometimes its just the music that moves me, literally. I don't like dancing and I'm not very good at it, but when i hear certain songs my body just starts moving... and it makes me smile
I don't know why its soo important in peoples lives, i just know that we would be a sad, sad world without it.

Music is a common language even if you cant speak a persons language you can understand the emotion of the music played. In that sense it can bring cultures together such as the 500 million people from all around the world who watched the Diana concert today and we have the Live Earth concert next week.

Music to me, it the greatest form of emotional expression.
People are always looking for someone to relate to them and many find that through music and lyrics. Songs will sometimes bring emotions out of ourselves, that we are having trouble expressing.
I can listen to a Trance song without lyrics and just feel the emotion pouring out of the synth and rythym.
That goes for many cultures, too. They have similar experiences and write music about them, attracting certain audiences.

It's an easily accessible, readily available, creative form of media which, in many cases, provides a voice to a feeling or idea that people might find otherwise difficult to express.
It manages to be both personally and universally significant.
