Maybe- a leaky fuel injector unless its a carborated engine or else it may be a clogged air filter but regardless it's running rich (meaning too much fuel is going into the engine)

Also, to the guy right below who says we are all wrong. He has his facts confused. The first thing you learn about exhaust smoke is that black smoke is a rich condition, burning oil is a white-ish blue smoke. The following website explains it: http://www.go-fast.org/z28/diagnostics.html

Hope that helps

The most likely answer is the fuel air mixture that your engine burns for power is improperly skewed so there is more fuel in the mixture than required. The black smoke coming out of the exhaust would be unburned gasoline, which explains why your fuel economy has suffered. This is called rich mixture. There are many possible causes for this but a professional should be able to diagnose this without much trouble.

white smoke- usually moisture or water. maybe over heating or loss of coolant. oder that smells like urine.

blue smoke- usually burning oil in combustion. need to start checking oil more often.

dark smoke- maybe time for a tune up or catlike converter is bad and that will cause a bad oder like rotten eggs.

Ack, that's not good. Sounds like you might be burning oil. I'd get that car in to a mechanic. The smell is difficult to mistake for anything other than burning oil as well, pheeeeew it's wrong.

Yep... your engine is running rich.... that means too much gas...( petrol if you are in the uk) to air mixture in the carburetor. Now yep a tune up will help some what. But it may also be faulty fuel injectors. so get them checked too..
Do change out your spark plugs etc.

Your car's in need of a serious-a ss tune up. Oil is leaking into your engine which explains the black smoke. Get it fixed at the dealership; otherwise, go to Aamco to get it fixed.

Need to do a tune up, like really badly. Replace the spark plugs, wires, maybe, and also change that air filter out too. That'd help allot there. Good luck.

WRONG WRONG WRONG....

When the fumes are black, you're burning OIL - when the fumes are heavy and WHITE, you're burning too much gas...

You need a tune up bad, you're leaking oil into the engine

It means that you are burning fuel. The engine is running too rich. Too much fuel and not enough air. Need to have it looked at.
