To show what I mean: If the liar is trying to get another place to live and have someone to always do her bidding and an extra check for a while, she might brag about her previous exploits to the person she's running the scam on.

To the first responder: are you saying they do it to reassure themselves that they've still "got it?" Or it really builds them up?

I just don't understand why they do it, but I also don't understand how they keep people the way they do as long as they do. I believed a conner for six months even though every day I had to question whether or not she was ever truthful.

Simple...because they're human. What I mean is that no matter how hard a person tries to hide their lies, they will never be able to truly do so because the body doesn't lie. If you have someone who is a pathological liar, for instance, their body language will always tip you off, provided that you don't get so emotionally caught up in the lie that you miss the signs. This is what the liar counts on. ALL liars are manipulators. They have to be because if nobody became emotionally invested in the lie, they would be exposed from jump. The trick is to keep your cool and keep your eyes open. One thing to remember, if somebody is telling you a story that's not true, their eyes will bounce back and forth in their head. This is a biological response. We all have two halves to our brains. One side is the "creative" side, and the other is the "memory" side. (of course it's more complicated than that, but for the sake of answering this question, just think of it in those terms) A liar will have to access both sides of their brain in telling a lie. They have to access the creative side to make up the lie, and then the memory side to remember what the hell they just said. The eyes will go back and forth, but you have to watch closely to see it. Some people will say whatever in the name of stroking their own egos.

It's because they think they are so much smarter than everyone else, that even if they tell their victim about the scam, that person won't understand. Hard to believe, isn't it?

In addition to ego, it's a method for testing out how smart you are about catching onto them.

MOST criminals get caught because they can't keep their mouths shut.

It's their ego.
