I have a jean jacket that I am refashioning. I have these great old buttons that I would like to put on it to make it look funky rather than 'generic' but the jacket has those metal buttons that are put on by machines, the same kind you usually find on jeans (pants). I don't want to take the scissors to it as this would destroy the fabric and make putting other buttons on there impossible.

Has anyone ever taken these kinds of buttons off with success?

I have done this, it's pretty low-tech......take a hammer to it.
Pound it down. You will have a hole although it isn't that big. I suggest sewing your new button on with a large needle and waxed dental floss. If the fabric isn't denim or canvas, don't do it. Heavier fabrics are fine, but anything else it will ruin it.

I think the hammer is your best bet since pounding definitely won't damage the material like cutting would. You may want to try this instead. If you can't get the old buttons off take your funky buttons and add a couple of them in between each of the generic buttons, that would really look funky with thirty buttons on your jacket. Like pieces of flair. If you bend them all up with a hammer that would look really vintage.

u'r talking about the rivets snaps? wow, never have taken them off to replace them but once they come off.. the material may b a mess or even torn... i use to put rivet snaps ON jean material so u would need a something like a flat head screw driver to get bet. the rivet & the material. When they go tog. one side has these prongs that cut thru the material into the other rivet. So if u'r careful, u may b able to pry them off w/o tearing the material too mch. U may want to put that liquid stuff on that keep material from threading apart... (fabric stores) then sew u'r button. NOW that i think about it, i have taken some off to replace or didn't get them on correctly. They r a PAIN to do... but u can do it. IF u can find someone strong to help, if u don't think u have the "ooof" then do so.

hope this helps

Those buttons make a big hole in the fabric when they are put in. If you remove the button, it'll set loose all the fraying on that hole. Better to make or buy button covers.

To make your own, paint on a little circle of fabric and then gather the edges of the fabric to make a little pouch. Slip the pouch over the button, pull the gathering tight and sew or glue it shut. You could also knit or crochet some covers.
