I've heard that it is not good for the transmission, to park a car facing uphill. Is this true and if so why?

Always turn your wheels towards the curb incase the parking brake fails and don't depend on the transmission to hold it. Some cars like Fords, can jump out of park.

Parking pointed downhill makes it easier to take off

When you park the car, either uphill or down, Set the parking brake first. Then put the car into park position. The wheels should be curbed. Turned in the direction that would have the car run into the curb if the brakes failed. The idea being that the car would be stopped by hitting the curb and stopping. Remember that from Driver's ED ?????

If the hill is steep and you have an automatic there is a little pin that holds the car still by locking the transmission. This pin is not very big or strong. The force on this pin is increased when parked on a hill, uphill OR downhill.

The best way to park on a hill is to stop, engage parking brake, then put it into park.
