I've just noticed a few white spots on my orange dwarf platy's tail that were not there before. Does that mean she is sick or is that normal? She is pregnant...would that have anything to do with the spots?

Could this affect other fish in the tank? How did she get "ick"? What is that? Are the drops expensive?

I had just put her in a 1 gallon tank to have her babies yesterday. The tank used to hold another platy that is now in a larger tank with 2 tetras and they're all great. Could ick affect some fish and not others? Is this going to affect her fry? The spots are for sure larger than grains of salt. They look like the size of small gravel.

If these spots look like small grains of salt, then it is a case of ich. If they look larger or somehow different than that, you are dealing with some other potential problem.

Ich medications are available at any place pet supplies are sold, but look for the kind with malachite green and formalin as active ingredients. That's the bet type of medication on the market. Quick Cure is one like this and is available in many stores.

Ich medication is quite cheap, only a few dollars for a bottle.

As for where it comes from, ich is a parasite and would have to come into the tank with something you recently added. Fish, plants something like that.

Best of luck, it's easy enough to treat, but you need to treat soon or it will kill the fish!

Sounds like "ick".

You can get some drops at the fish store that will take care of it.

ichthyopthirius "Ick" i know i spelled that wrong. jack up the heat to 80, pop those parasites out of their skin and you need to get one of them drugs at the fish store that treats it. Once they pop out of the skin, they die in water that have the drugs in it.
they're a parasite anyways.
