The only fish that can even survive (not being happy though) in a bowl is a Betta. They stay small and breathe from the air (they have lungs and gills). If you do get a Betta for a bowl, make sure you clean the water very often, and also, make it the largest bowl you can possibly find. Do not put a lilly on top, this doesn't give the fish a lot of room to breathe or swim... The Betta would do a lot better in a tank with a heater and filter, but if that is all the commitment you are putting towards your pets, it will be fine.
Goldfish cannot survive in bowls because they get about8 inches long, that is why people never know why their Goldfish died when they have it in a bowl, they stunted it to death.

The only fish that can live in a bowl without a filter and an air bubbler are goldfish (I know you don't want them) or betta fish. These fish are surface breathers, while most other fish take their oxygen directly from the water. If there's not enough oxygen in the water for them, they'll die, and usually bowls and tanks can't produce enough oxygen on their own without the help of an air bubbler. But since the goldfish and bettas take their oxygen from the surface, they're fine. There are many different colors of betta fish, but the drawback is that you can only have one at a time. More than one betta in a bowl together (even a big bowl) will kill eachother. Goldfish are nice because you can have more than one but they can be pretty dirty. They do come in more colors than most people think, though. They can be orange, gold, black, white, and brown, too. They also come in many different varieties that all look very different from eachother, not just the traditional carnival goldfish. You also want to make sure that you don't overload your bowl if you go with goldfish. The general rule of thumb is one inch of fish per gallon of water.

No i don't think there is because gold fish grow bigger and have a longer life span, than a beta,so you would have to get a bigger fish bowl for it constantly, and other fish would seem strange in a fish bowl. Betas only live for a year from purchase, trust me i've had 3 and they died in about 2 years each.

i fully agree with the last two answers listen to them they r the best in this fienld. the only fish really capable of living in a bowl is a betta and even still it probably will not live as long or as happy as its big aquarium counterparts. if ur really focused on not getting a betta i suggest u get the smallest possible fish u can find. ive heard the "glofish" fish that glow in the dark do pretty well but no fish should be cramped in such a tiny bowl. its better for you and te fish if u just go bigger.

Hi, Despite popular opinion, no fish can live in a bowl happily. One of three things will happen, it will get stunted by the lack of space, it will die of toxic poisoning by being in an enclosed space with it's own waste & if that doesn't kill it the inability to orientate in a sphere will drive it crazy.
Whatever the fish, a filtered tank with a lid is always a 'Betta' option & in most cases, especially Goldfish the biggest tank you can reasonably accommodate in your home as they grow huge. A happy fish is far more entertaining to watch than an unhappy one & a tank is much less hassle than a bowl both in terms of water stability & maintenance.

Ditto to your second answer. No fish will do well in a bowl except possibly a Betta and then only if you do tons of maintenance every other day. Your best bet is to spend just a little more and get a small tank with a filter and heater, then you have many, many choices of fish to keep and do so in a healthy and happy manner.
Goldfish, puffers, guppies etc are all completely uninformed answers.

Nope! ALL fish need proper filteration, room and aeration to thrive. IMHO fish bowls should be pulled from every shelf of every petstore! Not even a betta should be subjected to that.
