Yes, most wireless laptops still come with modems. Even though broadband Internet is in most houses today, it is not everywhere and therefore many people still rely on a dial up connection for Internet access.

Plus many people still use modems for sending faxes. Sure, email has cut down on the need to send a fax but again, not everyone has email.

But having said all that, when buying a low end laptop always check the system specs before buying. Some manufacturers have stopped putting modems in the low end units in an effort to save a few bucks. You can always add an external modem later but they are, in my opinion, expensive (about $50).

Hope this helps,

If your laptop has the phone jacks (not the large ones that look the same. Those are ethernet ports) on it then it does have a modem, however it would seem that it's malfunctioning if that is the case. It is possible to access a dial-up connection wirelessly, but you'll need to first create your own wireless home network. For this you would need a separate computer with a working dial-up connection, and a wireless router.

I agree with acklan as well. Ten years ago, every laptop sold had a dial-up modem built-in. Nowadays that's been replaced by an ethernet port, since the standard these days is broadband. Most laptops still have modems, but not all.

I have an Acer Aspire 3680 and i has a built in modem, and I got a wireless router with my broadband package from Sky. When I set it up it caused me such a headache as no-one told me to make sure the tiny switch on the front of the machine must be lit up before it would actually work wirelessly! I nearly strangled myself on the ethernet cable a time or two!

Not all. Modems are becoming a thing of the past, that's why they're phasing it out. The best way to make sure is to look at the laptop specifications.

Not DSL or Cable. Typically they will also have a RJ-45 Ethernet port along with the Wifi capability. Some still come with 56kbps dialup modems thought.

Sometimes. They will say if it is included or not.

I think most laptops are including the wireless modem these days since it is such a demanded item.
