Here is an offering on this -- not a truth, just an offering.
What you have before you is what you might call lateral movement, or looping. This is a habit very commonly occurring to those who engage the mind considerably.
In this event, you can't say to someone that he or she is "thinking too much" because then you have to ask, 'too much according to whom?, which in turn causes that much more of the same looping, and off you go into still other deeper thinking...
Usually, some sort of diversion helps alleviate this looping effect, because the incessant penchant of thinking deeper and deeper requires that you have parallel experiences to work off of, which helps break the looping cycle.
The bounty of thoughts needs a dimension or something practical that satisfies the inertia of continuously going deeper. Otherwise, you start a groove, if you will, that you get stuck in and find it difficult to pull out of.
This action is a loop, or as you say 'returning to the beginning', which is but a mental carousel, a merry-go-round, say: you see different takes and faces and different people who get on and get off, rather the selfsame result occurs: but 'you' don't find 'yourself' getting off and moving on to greater ventures, featuring fresh experiences.
One thing you can bank on is that you do have the sensation of movement: 'that' is the whole trap of it, for the movement gives the impression of progression but is not the case -- only is it an impression, of no true substance or ascension toward the new that you would prefer and strive for. Whether yours has been a conscious or unconscious pursuit, your sense that something is amiss indicates maybe you are caught in that loop.
This looping is very common, very.
A downside of this looping effect is that it expresses as doubt, attachment and confusion -- or even fear.
Find someone who you trust to talk to or things to do that offsets the looping effect...something that fosters a shifting from the usual...and familiar.

Everything will return from hence it came. Did you find any truth the entire time you were thinking? If you did you did not start back at the beginning. If you think you didn't learn anything, try concentration more on detail.

This is the normal thinking (looped pattern) of most people.
You are trying to go deeper without knowing what you are seeking. Understand that you are exploring your egoic psychological patterns to get to the source in order to change your mind and transform external reality - which is mirroring mind and its looped system.

I imagine I am returning to that one thing for a reason my brain has yet to yield to me... but it's stuck there subconsciously for a reason.

you need to talk to other like minded people. do you know why philosophers ask philosophers questions? because philosophers question the question.
if you understand that then you have your answer.
