Any lock a man can make, a man can crack. No, there is no 100% certain way to keep an account from being hacked into. Pretty much all you can do is use a series of random letters and numbers as a password, then keep it as secret as you can. Don't use passwords like your birthday, your dog's name, or anything else that someone who knows you might guess very easily.
If there is no password protection, anyone can open it.

Hi,
The answer to this question is very related to the Club device that's used to protect cars. Do you remember this thing? It was claimed that this crowbar would prevent theives from stealing a car. And it does...
except from people who REALLY want to steal your car.
That's how it is with password protection. It only protects your computer from the wannabe's and the amateurs who are just trying thier luck. The REAL theieves, the professionals, can get in your computer if they REALLY want to.
Fortunately this fact also works in our favor. Th real thieves with the real expertise are not in the least bit interested in hacking into your laptop to view your Myspace page. They want the big fish, and let's face it, you and I are goldfish.
Having said that, if you are using a password, make sure that it is a strong password (numbers, letters, and capital letters); otherwise, a basic bruteforce attack can easily guess your password.
Hope this is helpful!

Simply putting a password on a user account won't do anything to protect the system, as all one would have to do is log into the "Administrator" account instead. If you're going to password protect a laptop, create a password for your user account (and any other user accounts) and password protect the "Administrator" account as well.

The short, unhappy answer, is "yes". Merely having password protection is not security. Many passwords are laughably weak (hell, mine are!).
Many "hacks" are not against passwords but against unpatched services running on your system. You will need to "harden" your system, or at the very least install updates frequently. You might want to look into a software firewall (although all the ones I've tried under windows suck). If you are using a unix then you can use iptables, pf, ipf, etc.
System security is a large range of things. What system are you running? Windows?

If someone wants to get into it, a password is not going to protect it. Although if you're just an everyday person with nothing to hide you'll probably never have to worry about a someone wanting to hack into it. Just be smart and don't keep stuff such as credit card info, SSN, etc on it.

Online-All depends on computer. PC's can be hacked even if they have a firewall. Mac's cannot be hacked. A talented hacker can get into just about anything. If you don't use password to secure account, anyone can get to your files.

I guess that depends on how good your passwords are and how secure your settings are.
If some one can get to your computer there is a disk that will reset account passwords and it take less then a few minutes.

Is your laptop a wireless?
If it is then its hard for them to hack it.
Wireless is extremely hard.
But if wired, they will hack you just like a regular desktop.
