How could I make a planter box out of a hat box?

Indoor plants seeking new home! I know I should cover the hatbox in something to prevent the box from ever getting wet, but I would like to use around the house things as opposed to buying a pot and put it in the hat box.

What about draining? Is this possible?

Put a pie or cake pan in the bottom filled with marbles or gravel the put a pot on top of the gravel. Remove the pot to water the plant and drain before putting back on the gravel bed.
