I purchased this coin a couple of months ago and would like to know......
What would you grade this 1861 seated liberty quarter?
Also what is its value?

The coin grades about good. The obverse grades about good-3 while the reverse is about good-2. Lets just call it about good. Most coins in this grade are not worth much no matter how old they are. This however is a civil war date, I bought one in very good to fine condition, on Yahoo auctions a month or two ago for $19. to bad they closed the auction site for there were some good buy there. There is no dealer bid listed for an AG coin. The dealer bid is $18 for a grade good coin. To me it is worth $8-$10 and most dealers I know would take the cash. For the time it had a huge mintage 4,853,600 so it is far from scarce. Most were hoarded due to the war. I bet this one made it out west where it was used. It is a historic coin no matter where it has been.

Go with Taiping on this one. I agree with his grading of About Good. Part of the reverse rim and upper legend are gone so that prevented it from being graded Good. As for the value, I have seen a few sites selling the same grade quarter for around $10 to $13, but I would personally value it at $10. AG coins are normally space-fillers but since most of the Seated Lib quarters sell above $30 in grade Fine, grades in the Good range may be 'good' enough for cost savvy collectors trying to put together a complete date set or just going for the historical significance of the date.
