Building a tank is not the easiest thing in the world and I wouldn't suggest it unless you are building a really large tank. That's the only way it will be worth the time and effort. I have several homemade tanks including 2 750 gallon tanks that are plywood and glass. That is really the best way to go in ease of construction and cost savings.

Here's a page that will give you some great information about building tanks as well as parts lists for any size you pick.

Hope that helps

Depends on the size but here goes.

The base should be measured including the width of the four sides. Tricky bit is to put all the pieces in place using masking tape, once you have it all set square, start applying silicon sealant, press a good amount from the nozzle along each joint, then run your finger along to make it tidy. Once you've done all the inside leave for 24hrs, I would advise that you take a few breathers while doing it as the stuff will give you a blinding headache if you inhale too much.
Next day take the tape off and with your finger push sealant into the outside of each joining. Leave for 24hrs.

Moment of truth, fill it with water and leave for 24hrs, if there's no leaks excellent you've done it, however if there's a leak you have to strip off the sealant and do it again, don't try to plug the hole because it won't hold in the long run.

I would not guarantee this above 30 gallons, I've done tanks up to 100, using plate glass about 30yrs ago but materials have changed for the better.

In the end it's often cheaper to pick up used tanks, as I've being doing for a fish house I'm planning on at some stage.

Like magicman said, only build a large one, if you're going to do it at all. I personally wouldn't build one less than 200 gallons. Otherwise, I would find one for sale at a yard sale.
