Unless overtime is specifically a condition of your employment -- and for a lot of jobs it is, your bosses cannot legally compel you to work overtime, especially for less than time and a half.

I would check this with the National Labor Relations Board in your county as there are some whacky laws out there on the books, but in either case, more than 40 hours in a week equals overtime pay, period. (Unless you're in management.)

Overtime rules apply to people who are paid hourly, not those on salary.

If you are paid hourly then the company is trading their money for your time. They are under obligation of law to pay you fairly and the current labor laws say that means you get "overtime" pay if you exceed 40 hours in the week.

Nuances might change from State to State, but that's the gist.

You DO have a choice. Go speak with your board of Wages & Hours.
