I was watching a documentary a while ago and it was about this couple in prison. The one guy said he considered himself straight because he only liked women and effeminate men.

My question is, do you have to like masculine men to be gay?

If you are a man and sexually attracted to ANY other man (and not women) then I would consider that gay. There are lots of men who are attracted or sexually aroused by the thoughts of other men but may also be attracted to women.
The documentary that involved someone who had been in prison is not something that you can gage sexuality by. This was a situation where someone used the situation to express sexual tension / frustration and most likely may have enjoyed it. Whether it was enjoyable to him or not, he clearly cannot accept that he participated and has rationalized that since the man was effeminate, then he must ONLY be attracted to women.
I call shenanigans on the guy. :)
Cheers, Dude.

Maybe the problem was that these are men in prison, the real world doesn't work like that. The dude was just trying to rationalize his bisexuality.

But if you like men you're gay or bi, nothing else. But I doubt the documentary filmmakers would correct a prisoner and risk having him freak out.

That man is bisexual with a perference for effeminate men but alot of guys who have sex with men will call themselves straight because they act masculine or they don't want nobody to know that they're gay or bisexual.

No, just men, masculine men just happen to be the more common preference. In different cultures (such as the prison sub-culture) sexuality related things are often defined differently, but that doesn't apply to us.

No, of course not! There are all kinds of "gay" people and I'm not sure anyone can really explain why we are attracted to the people we are.

Those who are incarcerated face completely different situations and challenges than those of us who are not. These "prison documentaries" can put all sorts of ideas into people's heads, and I wouldn't trust them for your basic info on such topics as this.

That guy that considers himself straight just likes to kick back and let the other guy blow him, or he likes to f*** but not take it. He's generalizing to say that all "effeminate men" are bottoms. He just wants to be served.

no. from my understanding gay means a man is turned on by another man. the man does not have to be masculine.

nope thats what i like to refer to as gay for the stay, its a common jail practice. however being gay is someone who exclusively likes the same sex if you like both that makes you bisexual no matter the personality traits exibited by your sex partners.
