Wi-Fi is a brand name for the standard for Wireless LAN access. The standard is actually "802.11".

It's a term to describe a method to connect multiple computers at a single location to a common network without using wire.

Example: You have 3 computers in your home and don't want to install wire all over the house to connect those 3 machines to one another or the internet. 802.11 would be a possible solution.

What do you need to use wireless at home?

Wireless router or access point (connect to your Cable or DSL modem directly with a cat 5 cable, if you want to share that Cable or DSL internet with all of your computers)
Wireless adapters for each computer. These can be Add-in cards, PC Cards, or even USB types.

If you are a network engineer or plan to become one, further research is important. See the source for more detailed explanations of exactly what the standard is and so on.

You don't need to be an electrical engineer or electrician to turn the light on in the dark.

WIFI is essentially the use of radio waves to transmit and receive data.

You purchase, or have pre-installed, a small radio device ("wifi card") and connect to wireless access points (also called "APs" for short) which point a radio signal to and from the card.

It allows you to avoid having to run a copper cable ("ethernet cable") from the last point of internet access to your machine/laptop.
