If you've already purchased the mattress (or it's the same for pillows), you are allowed to remove the tag.
The warning on the tag is meant for the retailer.
A long time ago, mattress and pillow makers could use whatever they wanted as stuffing. You could end up sleeping on a mattress full of bugs or stuffing infected with bacteria and diseases. The tags were meant to make the manufacturers list what stuffing was used so consumers could make an informed decision. Also, it was, at one time, a common practice to put new covers on old mattresses and sell them as new. The tags are a way to let you know you are buying a brand new mattress, and not one that has been re-covered.
So, as long as you are the consumer, and not a mattress salesperson, it is perfectly legal to remove the tags.
Also, newer mattress and pillow tags no longer say "Do not remove under penalty of law." In order to clarify things for everyone, tags now read "Tag may not be removed except by consumer."
That makes things a little easier.

It is crazy- isn't it? Actually that tag is for the retailer. Anytime we buy a product that has inaccessibe fabrics or fillers inside, the manufacturers are required to disclose the contents on the outside of the item. Since we can't open up a piillow cushion on the couch or the padding in the mattress before we buy , we are provided the content information on the tag outside. That way, we will know if there are feathers in the pillow or sawdust inside a pincusion. Once you purchase an item and are the end-user (you will not be reselling the item) you may gleefully remove the tag without any fear of retribution. But most of those tags are sewn into the closing seam- and yanking them out may rip the item. Instead, get out the sizzors and clip the tags close to the edge. Hope this helps.

Once the mattress is yours you can do anything you want with it including pulling off the label. The label is simpley there for people buying the mattress from the store.. If it worries you take the label off and put it in a drawer somewhere if you think the mattress police will come looking for it.

It is because people would take used mattresses recover them take the tag off and put a new one on. Then they would resell it and people would think the mattress was new but in reality it was used. As long as you are not planning on reselling it as a new mattress when you get it home you can take the tag off. it the people in the stores that cannot remove them.

Don't try this at home. Only professional mattress tag pullers are authorized to perform this procedure. Severe injury or death may result. Please call your local Department of Tag Pulling to report all tags needing removal. Your name will remain anonymous.

You can pull it off if you buy it...it's the retailer who is not allowed to pull it off.
