They are really not good computer "experts". Large American companies can either pay us 10-14 dollars an hour, or pay someone in India a dollar or 2 an hour. If you look at the conversion rate for the dollar verses the rupee, which is a good pay for them. If you count in the long distance charge they also have to pay for it is still cheaper than paying someone here to do it. Thus most of the call centers are in India. This could be stopped If America got off its butt and started writing there senators and there congressmen, but we will not do that. So it will never stop.

The people from India are no better than the people from anywhere else. They are more noticeable because many companies can save (lots of) money by outsourcing their support to foreign countries, such as India.

I do not think that this statement can be generalised only for Indians as I have worked with some of the smartest programmer from US, UK, Spain and China.
In last 3 decades the creamy layer of Indian colleges like IITs, IIMs, AIMS etc have moved to land of opportunities and made significant difference to the computing and engineering world. This creamy layer is certainly one of the best on this earth and has helped get a good image for their technical skills (remember Dilbert's Friend Asok from IIT).
Another fact which has really helped Indian engineers to become good computer expert is the formalised education system and lots of opportunities to learn & grow.

:Airconditioned offices/quick job opportunities in India and abroad, or for self employment.
People working in call centers may not have computer knowledge, and a basic degree and training in English will do. Answers about call centers , here , do not count.
( Example Medical transcription, customer service, banking etc )

I am uncertain that they are any better than what we have in the US. I think they get a lot of work because of the difference in therir labor rates. And that is not to take anything away from their talent; it's just an economic fact.

Their schools are disciplined, teachers are respected, students are encouraged by their parents from day one to study, and they are taught that the best way to get ahead is to be educated.
